AVEVA & Wonderware SCADA Engineering — CitectSCADA, PlantSCADA, System Platform, InTouch

Beetle Engineering develops, migrates and supports the full range of AVEVA SCADA and HMI platforms across mining, water utilities, sugar and manufacturing operations across Queensland. This includes CitectSCADA, PlantSCADA, Wonderware InTouch, System Platform, AVEVA Edge, and Citect Anywhere — and legacy Wonderware and Citect installations that predate the AVEVA rebrand.

AVEVA and Citect across Queensland industry

The AVEVA product family covers two distinct SCADA lineages that were brought together under a single brand through acquisition - the Citect line (CitectSCADA, now PlantSCADA) and the Wonderware line (InTouch, System Platform, Historian). Both are widely deployed across Queensland mining, sugar, water utilities, and processing operations, and both have significant installed bases running versions that are years or decades old.

The product line has gone through significant rebranding and acquisition history under Schneider Electric Software and then AVEVA. Understanding which version of a product is running, what it is called now, what the support status is, and what the migration path looks like requires direct experience with the platform history - not just the current AVEVA product catalogue.

CitectSCADA and PlantSCADA

CitectSCADA v7.x remains in service at a significant number of Queensland coal mining and sugar mill sites. It is a mature, stable platform, but AVEVA support for legacy Citect versions is finite and migration planning is increasingly relevant for sites that have deferred the decision.

PlantSCADA 2023/2024 is the current Citect platform and the primary migration target for CitectSCADA v7.x sites. The project structure is broadly compatible with earlier Citect versions, but migration requires careful review of device drivers, graphics libraries, and any custom Cicode scripting. Citect Anywhere provides HTML5 remote access to PlantSCADA and CitectSCADA projects without requiring the Citect thick client - useful for remote operations centres and management monitoring access.

Wonderware InTouch and System Platform

Standalone Wonderware InTouch remains in widespread use across Queensland industry. Many sites have InTouch applications that have been in service for a decade or more, modified by multiple engineers, and no longer accurately reflect the installed system. Rationalisation, documentation, and modernisation of these applications - whether in-place or as part of a System Platform migration - is a regular part of our SCADA work.

Wonderware Archestra / AVEVA System Platform is the object-oriented enterprise SCADA layer built on top of InTouch. Galaxy repository administration, object model development, and multi-server System Platform deployments are within our scope for both new projects and support of existing installations.

AVEVA Edge (formerly InTouch Edge HMI) covers lightweight edge HMI and data logging applications - remote pump stations, satellite site displays, and embedded HMI applications where a full SCADA platform is not required.

Recent project experience

Mackay Sugar OT cybersecurity remediation and Citect Anywhere deployment — OT network remediation including segmentation, remote access hardening, and deployment of Citect Anywhere to provide secure HTML5-based SCADA access without exposing the Citect thick client environment to broader network risk.

QCoal Cook CHPP — CitectSCADA to PlantSCADA 2023 upgrade — migration of the Cook Coal Handling and Preparation Plant SCADA from CitectSCADA v7.x to PlantSCADA 2023, including device driver review, graphics migration, and Cicode audit prior to cutover.

Sugar Australia Racecourse Refinery — OT audit including CitectSCADA documentation — comprehensive OT asset audit covering the refinery’s CitectSCADA installation, including tag database documentation, version status, and control system architecture as part of a full OT current-state inventory.

MSF Tableland Mill — FactoryTalk View SE virtualisation scoping — while FactoryTalk is a Rockwell platform rather than AVEVA, this project demonstrates the SCADA server virtualisation capability that applies equally to CitectSCADA, PlantSCADA, and System Platform installations running on ageing physical hardware.

FAQ

AVEVA questions.

Yes. CitectSCADA v7.x is still running at a significant number of Queensland mining and sugar sites. We provide fault support, project modification, and migration scoping for sites on this platform. Many operations are weighing up whether to migrate to PlantSCADA 2023/2024 or to an alternative platform - we can assess the options and scope a migration that fits within available shutdown windows.
PlantSCADA (formerly CitectSCADA) is the current AVEVA Citect platform. AVEVA rebranded CitectSCADA to PlantSCADA with the 2020 release series, with PlantSCADA 2023 and 2024 being the current supported versions. For sites running CitectSCADA v7.x or earlier, PlantSCADA is the primary migration target within the Citect product family. The project structure is broadly compatible, though migration requires careful review of device drivers, graphics, and any custom Cicode.
Citect Anywhere is an HTML5 gateway that allows operators to access a CitectSCADA or PlantSCADA project from a web browser without installing the Citect thick client. It is used for read-only monitoring access from non-standard devices, remote operations centres, and management dashboards where installing a full Citect client is not practical. We configure Citect Anywhere as part of SCADA access and remote monitoring projects.
Yes. Many Queensland sites run Wonderware InTouch and System Platform installations that predate the AVEVA rebrand. We work on these systems for fault support, modification, and migration projects. Older InTouch versions and Application Server / System Platform versions are still in widespread use and we understand the differences between versions and the migration paths available.
Wonderware Archestra is the underlying object-oriented framework for AVEVA System Platform. Applications are built from object instances that inherit from templates in a Galaxy repository - changes to templates propagate to instances, which makes large-scale SCADA applications more maintainable than equivalent InTouch deployments. System Platform is the platform of choice for large, multi-server SCADA deployments across mine-wide monitoring, regional water authority SCADA, and multi-site operations.
AVEVA Edge (formerly InTouch Edge HMI and Wonderware Edge) is a lightweight SCADA and HMI platform designed for remote, embedded, and edge computing applications. It is commonly used for remote pump station monitoring, satellite site HMIs, and applications where a full System Platform deployment is not justified. We configure and deploy AVEVA Edge as part of remote telemetry and distributed monitoring projects.
Yes. Migration from standalone InTouch to AVEVA System Platform is a common project type for organisations that need multi-node SCADA with centralised tag management and historian integration. The migration requires careful planning - the InTouch application needs to be re-architected as a System Platform application object model, not just imported directly.
Yes. Historian configuration, tag management, and client reporting are part of our SCADA work. We configure Historian servers, set up tag replication from InTouch and System Platform, and develop Historian Client reports. We also work on integrating Historian data into third-party reporting platforms.
